Grazia Marchianò, aesthetologist, orientalist and editor of the Opera Omnia of her late husband Elémire Zolla (1926-2002), makes the disarming attempt to rethink the human condition, beset by finitude and imperfection, in the light of the formidable but divergent contributions in purpose and methods that the physical sciences, on the one hand, and the ancient spiritual disciplines, on the other, have made to the construction of a planetary society. To the jaw-dropping technological achievements of a future just around the corner, Tibetan experts in deep meditation, including the 14th Dalai Lama and Buddhist researchers from various countries, juxtapose methods of inner cultivation tested over millennia - breath vigilance, awakening to silent awareness, contemplative immersion - that concur to initiate an inwardly transformative experience, beneficial not so much to "getting out of the world" as to entering it more deeply.
